Vitamins That Fight Gout and Why

Gout is a condition, which is inflammation of the joints of the body.  This inflammation is caused by excessive amounts of uric acid in the bloodstream.  This happens when the kidneys are unable to process all the uric acid the body is dumping in the kidneys. This build up of uric acid can occur for years without pain.  Then when the body is saturated, and the pain begins, it can be chronic.

Specific foods rich in purine cause this excess.  Typically these foods are high in fat.  While some vegetables contain low amounts of purine, the biggest culprit of purine in the diet is meats, red meats, seafood, and fish.

In all the fruits that have been tested for possible treatment of gout pain, fresh cherries are the only fruit that has vitamin c in its oxidized form. While other fruits have vitamin C, none to the extent and in that oxidized form that fresh cherries do.  This form of vitamin C prevents the forming of free radicals.  As more gout sufferers try the vitamin C treatment, the reports are coming back that relief has been achieved. 

How much vitamin C is suggested?  Those who have been on the vitamin C treatments have taken 500 milligrams to 8 grams each day and found that it did lower the amount of uric acid in the bloodstream.  The goal is to reduce uric acid in the bloodstream.   Some have found a significant reduction in gout attacks, so much so, that they have resumed consumption of some of the forbidden foods such as meats, fats, and purine-rich foods. 

Another vitamin that has also aided the gout sufferer is a B vitamin called folic acid. Since it is recommended to take B vitamins together, it is good to get a multiple B vitamin with at least 5 milligrams of folic acid.  When vitamin C and folic acid are combined there has been some indication that this reduces uric acid even further.  It is as if the vitamin C and folic acid are providing a protection from the formation of uric acid when purine rich foods are consumed.

Vitamins A & E are also helpful because these are anti oxidants.  Selenium is another anti oxidant that is powerful in optimum health and has been shown to benefit gout suffers.

Many use the vitamin names to form an acronym of ACES, vitamins A, C, E, and Selenium.  The high anti oxidant properties of these vitamins makes these the vitamins of choice for gout sufferers. 

These vitamins, A, C, E, and Selenium, combined with a low purine diet, and high concentration of fruits and vegetables, have shown significant relief for the gout sufferer.
